What have we taken from this?
From all our research, we have found out lots of information from our target groups. These interviews have helped us relate to the target audience and allowed us to have insightful information about what they want, and how they want it. After listening to the vox pops, interviews, and survey, we have come to a final decision on the storyboard and how the video will play out. This can be seen in our final storyboard, where we use stop-motion to set each scenes out, using realistic shots by cropping the pictures in the video.
R&B was definitely the most favourable genre, which is evident in our research, there were also other factors that helped us decide to use this genre.
- Class - Can use location of London
- Actors/Actresses - knew from the beginning who we could have
- Genre identity - we as a pair are very familiar with the codes and conventions of R&B music videos
Because we already knew this, we could start asking the audience what they wanted to see. After interviewing, surveying, and analysing the information we recieved, we found that the most popular criterea for our music video would be to have an R&B music video, with a song by Drake, with a narrative plot to the video.
With this information, we could start planning the actual video itself. As we had asked the people 'What would you expect to see in a music video to this music?' we had an idea on what the target audience actually wanted to see, other than just following what other music videos had done. We feel that the views given to us by the target audience were of course influenced by current music videos, as this is the only way they would know what to expect. The views of the target audience were similar to conventional to current R&B music videos, meaning that even though we asked them specifically what they expected to see in this music video, they gave us ideas that were used in R&B music videos already. This is both positive and negative. Positive because the actual task is to produce a conventional music video, negative because the audience didn't have any outstanding, abstract ideas to give that would challenge the conventions of an R&B music video.
Overall, we feel our research has been conducted in an efficient, reasonable, and logical way. Instead of printing off lots of questionnaires just to get one word answers back, we conducted a very small survey online, which could be done in minutes, and didn't require the need for lots of paper, which could easily be lost. We asked the same questions in the interviews/vox pops, meaning we could directly compare the ideas that the two people had. We then asked people what their idea of stylish was. We got them to draw/write down what (in their eyes) thought was stylish. After looking back at this, and uploading it to our site, we could have a clear view of the dominant ideology of 'stylish' which involved jeans, jacket, shirt, glasses and jewellery. This was a huge positive for us, as this is what we had planned to dress our actor in, which gave us confidence that when people watch the video, they will immediately understand what the actor is representing.
